Always in a pickle with HardyWares

Margaret and Larry of HardyWares Preserves both grew up on farms, and as Margaret explains, “after 25 years living in cities, we had a yearning to get back to our country roots. We found a hidden gem in Necum Teuch, that we renovated for a winter getaway, but soon found we wanted to move there permanently. We were making preserves for gift giving at Christmas, the feedback was so positive we decided to test it at a local farmers market, with ten varieties.”

That was eight years ago, and now Margaret and Larry take their selection of over 50 flavours of preserves across Nova Scotia to music festivals, craft shows and exhibitions.

Asked why they love working in Atlantic Canada, the Hardys said the best part is that there are so many bests. “The best produce to make their preserves. The best customers, who are committed to supporting local. The best venues to sell our product, and we get to enjoy the best entertainment anywhere!”

Margaret and Larry were at our fall Harvest Greets the Holiday event, and that prompted them to join our spring show. Margaret says, “The Expo attracts thousands of people, which will give us the platform to network and pursue new opportunities.”

With more than fifty flavours to choose from, what are the most popular? “It’s a tie between Sweet Mustard Pickles, a maritime favourite with most meals, and Christmas Jam, a seasonal favourite popular as both a jam and a condiment with turkey dinner.” The couple’s personal favourite is Smokin’ Blueberry Jelly, which contrasts the sweetness of blueberries with the heat of Jalapenos, perfect for cheese and crackers.
